Outraged Ukrainians protest leader's Russia overture

Pro-Europe protesters at a camp on Independence Square in Kiev on December 7, 2013 Outraged Ukrainians rallied in central Kiev on Saturday after President Viktor Yanukovych discussed a new strategic partnership agreement with Russia's Vladimir Putin upon rejecting a historic EU deal. Several thousand supporters of Western integration braved swirling winds and a heavy snowfall to maintain control of the capital's iconic Independence Square for the seventh successive day. The embattled Ukrainian president held unannounced talks with Putin in Russia on Friday after completing a mission to China aimed at drumming up backing for his cash-strapped government. Yanukovych's official website said the meeting at Putin's Black Sea retreat in Sochi -- their fourth in just over a month -- focused on "trade and economic cooperation ... and preparation for the future treaty on strategic partnership".

From T-shirts to ostrich eggs, mourners snap up Mandela mementos

By Tosin Sulaiman JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - From books and T-shirts to bracelets and ostrich eggs, Nelson Mandela art and memorabilia have been flying off shelves and stalls as mourners search for a memento of South Africa's anti-apartheid legend. Souvenirs bearing the likeness of the former president, who died peacefully at his Johannesburg home on Thursday, had never been hard to find in South Africa, where he was already revered in life as a national hero for his struggle to end apartheid. At the upscale Sandton City mall in Johannesburg, primary school teacher Salo Mathen had just bought two T-shirts from a store selling clothing and items bearing Mandela's handprint or the number 46664, his prisoner number during the nearly three decades he spent in apartheid jails. The shop sells brightly colored polo shirts, trousers, dresses, and flip flops.

WTO hails 'historic' first global trade agreement

Indonesia Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan (right) shakes hands with WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo in Nusa Dua, Bali on December 7, 2013 Nusa Dua (Indonesia) (AFP) - Commerce ministers capped days of hard negotiations on Saturday by approving a WTO agreement on international commerce they hailed as a "historic" boost for the trade body. The agreement still falls far short of the World Trade Organization's lofty but elusive vision of tearing down global trade barriers through its frustrating, 12-year-old Doha Round of talks. But the accord reached on the Indonesian resort island of Bali nevertheless marks the first global agreement struck by the Geneva-based body since its 1995 founding. "For the first time in our history, the WTO has truly delivered," an exhausted but relieved WTO director-general Roberto Azevedo told a closing ceremony.

Aussies look to 'cook' England some more in Ashes - Johnson

Johnson, still sporting his drooping moustache, was the destroyer with seven for 40 bringing England to their knees and leaving them facing a mounting 530-run deficit as Australia look to go two-up in the five-Test series against the Ashes holders. England could not handle Johnson's sheer pace as the left-arm speedster carried on from his man-of-the-match Brisbane performance to put the tourists once again on the rack.

Newcastle deepen gloom for Man Utd and Moyes

Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye celebrates scoring the opening goal during the team's English Premier League football match against Manchester United in Manchester on December 7, 2013 Manchester United's dismal season lurched into crisis on Saturday after a 1-0 loss at home to Newcastle United condemned the champions to their fifth defeat of the season. Yohan Cabaye's goal just after the hour gave Newcastle their first victory at Old Trafford since 1972 and consigned United to back-to-back home defeats in the league for the first time since May 2002. Having lost 1-0 to Everton on Wednesday, United have now lost as many games as they did in the whole of last season's title-winning campaign and David Moyes's side could fall 15 points behind leaders Arsenal before the weekend is out. United were without Wayne Rooney through suspension, but they restored Robin van Persie to their starting XI following a four-game absence with a groin strain and saw Phil Jones test visiting goalkeeper Tim Krul with an early shot.

Former factory employee Richard Smith stands in front of factory owned by Platinum that was shut down by the company in 2010 By Carrick Mollenkamp MACON, Georgia (Reuters) - Sanders Walker had been working for 13 years at a BWAY Corp factory in Macon, Georgia, when the word came down one September 2011 morning: The company, a maker of plastic and metal containers, was closing the plant. The private-equity firm that owned BWAY when Walker lost his job enjoyed a more satisfying relationship with the company. High-risk debt issued by BWAY helped Chicago-based Madison Dearborn Partners LLC acquire the manufacturer in June 2010 for $915 million. In that partially debt-financed buyout, Madison Dearborn put up just $294 million of its own cash.

Yemen says regains ministry compound, kills 11 militants

Yemen's Defense Ministry said on Friday it had regained full control of its Sanaa military compound a day after a militant attack that killed 52 people, and an al Qaeda-affiliated group claimed responsibility for the assault. Troops killed 11 militants in the violence triggered by a suicide bomber and gunmen wearing army uniforms, the ministry said. The interim Yemeni government is fighting southern secessionists and northern rebels in addition to al Qaeda-linked militants, who are seeking to overthrow the government and impose their version of Islamic law. A Defense Ministry statement said three of the militants were killed at the compound's gate, three inside the premises after they had killed the foreign medics in a hospital there, while five others were pursued and killed later on Thursday.

Ukraine's turmoil is born of history and geography

By Gareth Jones and Thomas Grove DONETSK/LVIV, Ukraine (Reuters) - Kiev is the stage for Ukraine's political drama, but the script was written in its borderlands. While the capital is convulsed by protests, the East-West tensions tugging at Ukraine are perhaps felt most in Donetsk and Lviv, two cities more than 1,000 km (600 miles) apart which are divided by history and - for some - a sense of the future. In the one city, the demonstrations against President Viktor Yanukovich are a threat to the nation. "These protests are a disgrace," said Viktor Chernov, a mechanic at a steel factory in Donetsk, a gritty industrial city near the eastern frontier with Russia.

World Cup draw launched amid mourning for Mandela

A Christmas tree with football-themed decorations and flags is seen as the sun goes down on the eve of the Brazil 2014 FIFA Football World Cup final draw, in Costa do Sauipe, Bahia state, on December 5, 2013 Costa do Sauipe (Brazil) (AFP) - Mourning the death of Nelson Mandela, organizers on Friday set the stage for the World Cup draw as 32 teams waited with bated breath to see who they will face next June. Anti-apartheid hero Mandela's passing almost two decades after his iconic embrace with a mainly white South African Rugby World Cup-winning team has added poignancy to the showpiece proceedings, set to kickoff at 1600 GMT. Yet Mandela's death has changed the tone as participants remember a man who knew all too well how to harness sport and political progress. For all the logistical problems Brazil has faced in trying to overhaul a continent-sized country of some 200 million people, news the South African icon is no more has struck a chord at the beach resort draw venue in Costa do Sauipe.
